Teaching Philosophy

My pedagogy is oriented by the task of developing informed, engaged, and flexible democratic citizens. With this goal in mind, I design my teaching to bolster three sensibilities in my students: 1.) Critical analysis of public communication, 2.) Direct participation in deliberative decision-making, 3.) Cosmopolitan appreciation of difference. Ultimately, it is my intent to develop the kinds of citizens and scholars needed to shed the collective ignorance, apathy, and intolerance that imperil democracy. Living together democratically is not natural; rather it requires a considerable amount of knowledge, empathy, and practice. The twenty-first-century will continue to be marked by accelerations in global connectivity, and consequently, the promise of a more peaceful and equitable world rests on our ability to successfully communicate, relate, and deliberate together.

To see how I attempt to use rhetorical education to cultivate democratic sensibilities read "Imitatio, Civic Education, and the Digital Temper."
